Some "Sweet" covers.

Not exactly new news, but Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs (Bangles) are collaborating for an album of covers. The album, titled "Under The Covers Vol. 1", is due out April 18.

And now you can hear two of these tracks at the "Sid'n'Susie" (I get the Susie, but what's up with "Sid"?) myspace page: The Beatles' "And Your Bird Can Sing", and the Bee Gees' "Run to Me".

I've always enjoyed Matthew Sweet's covers. He's done so many, he could probably release a box set of them, but my particular favorites are "It Don't Matter to Me", from the soundtrack for the little-seen Ed Burns/Elijah Wood flick "Ash Wednesday", "Magnet and Steel", from the soundtrack for the slightly-more-seen "Sabrina The Teenage Witch", and "Let Me Be The One" from the Carpenters tribute "If I Were a Carpenter". He definitely has a knack for 70s soft rock.

His latest released cover is Tom Petty's "American Girl" from the High School Reunion compilation, an homage to movie songs from the 80s. This one I'm not so thrilled with, since he seems to be trying to sound more like Petty than himself. But you can judge for yourself via the cdbaby sample.
